چکیده

A new load balancing algorithm is presented based on power management of Access Points (APs) to reduce congestion at hot spots in Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) and to assign channels to APs The algorithm first finds the Most Congested Access Point (MCAP), then decreases its transmitted power in discrete steps, and the process continues until the users’ assignment which leads to a high balance index is reached. A new mathematical programming formulation is then applied to assign channels to the APs such that the Signal-to-Interference Ratio (SIR) at the users’ level is maximized. Results show that the algorithm is capable of reducing the overall congestion at hot spots in a WLAN and increases the SIR significantly for cases involving relatively large WLANs. In the process, network throughput is increased. [Article copies are available for purchase from InfoSci-on-Demand.com]

The Effect of an Enhanced Channel Assignment Algorithm on an IEEE 802.11 WLAN

In this paper, a channel-assignment algorithm at the Access Points (APs) of a Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) is proposed in order to maximize Signal-to-Interference Ratio (SIR) at the user level. We start with an initial channel assignment based on minimizing the total interference between APs. Based on this assignment, we calculate the SIR for each user. Then, another channel assignment is...

New Algorithm for Distributed Frequency Assignments in IEEE 802.11 Wireless Networks

The continuous growth of IEEE 802.11 wireless local area networks (WLAN) brings the benefit of a high speed wireless access to packet networks, such as Internet. But it also entails the successive appearance of new unresolved problems. One of these problems consists in the degradation of the performance observed by the users when there is a great number of radio networks coexisting in the same ...

Adaptive Channel Allocation for IEEE 802.11 Wireless LAN

Today, IEEE 802.11 wireless LANs (WLANs) are widely deployed throughout the world. It is known that static channel assignments are not sufficient for these networks due to traffic variations. However, in order to maintain compatibility with the existing protocol standards, it is not possible to employ dynamic channel allocation methods to handle traffic-load fluctuations. Rather, adaptive assig...

Study of algorithms to optimize frequency assignment for autonomous IEEE 802.11 access points

This study points to an automatic channel assignment for unadministrated, chaotic WLANs to take advantage on the given capacity of the IEEE 802.11 frequency spectrum and to enhance the quality of the entire WLAN sphere. This paper determines four public channel assignment algorithms for IEEE 802.11 networks. We show the problem of channel assignment in unadministrated WLANs and describe each al...

Design and Analysis of Channel Assignment Algorithm for IEEE 802.11 WLAN Network Performance Enhancements

Wireless local area network (WLAN’s) using single channel have limited bandwidth. Channel interference between Access Points (APs) of WLAN also decreases the network throughput. The solution of this problem is to transmit data simultaneously on multiple channels is considered as an alternative. In this paper, we propose a channel assignment algorithm for wireless local area network (WLAN) to an...
